An Outcast of the Islands |

"The
subject is the boundless, savage vanity of an ignorant man who is
successful but has neither principles nor any motive other than the
satisfaction of his own vanity. He is not even faithful to himself.
Hence his fall, his sudden degradation into physical enslavement by a
completely savage woman... [It is about] the indestructible loneliness
that surrounds, envelopes, clothes every human soul from the cradle to
the grave and, perhaps, beyond."
